Wood carving of Eva van Harf by Anna Maria van Schurman

Image Information

Anna Maria van Schurman carved this portrait of her mother, Eva van Harf, in palm wood. Eva van Harf is depicted with pearls in her hair and a calm demeanor. Van Schurman was often praised for her realistic portrayals of people; one visitor to the van Schurman household wrote that her carvings were so “expressive” that they “were carried away in admiration while looking at these masterpieces in astonishment.” (van Beek 2010, 131)
