This is a photograph of the University Hall at Utretch University. In 1636, Anna Maria van Schurman was invited to present a poem at the university’s opening. Soon after, in the same year, van Schurman became the first woman to study at a university in the Netherlands, perhaps even in all of Europe. She studied theology, philosophy, history, languages, and even medicine and physics.
